Dakota Gearhart

Dakota Gearhart is an artist and educator based between Queens, NY and Tampa, Florida. Her work spans performance, video, sound, text, sculpture, collage, and room-sized multimedia installations. She uses found materials she collects at places like microbiology labs, spam folders, and industrial dumps.  Reorganized according to science-fiction and anti-commercial aesthetics, these materials function to depict what a multi-species and non-binary world view might look like. With this intention, she bundles together her interests in perception, biology, queerness, the role of technology and intimacy, humor, and the importance of world-building to articulate more creative and less oppressive futures. Her work has been exhibited at The Bronx Museum of Art, NY; Tacoma Art Museum, WA; Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, OR; Equity Gallery, NY; On The Ground Floor, CA; Henry Art Gallery, WA; Vulpes Vulpes, London; Griessmuehle, Berlin; Lab’Attoir, Thessaloniki, Greece; and Taiyuan Normal University, China. She has been awarded the Puffin Foundation Grant, Artist Trust GAP Grant, Washington State 4Culture Project Grant, and the NEA Fellowship through a partnership with Residency Unlimited. Residencies completed include the Queens Museum Studio Program, NY; NARS Foundation, NY; Studios at MASS MoCa, MA; Elsewhere, NC; Wassiac Project, NY; Recology, WA; Residency Unlimited, NY; and The Bronx Museum AIM Program, NY. Currently, she is a Digital Media Fellow with BRIC, the leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn.
