Random Events

Random Events includes selected works by multidisciplinary artist Yorgos Papafigos. The exhibition features sculptures and animations that explore how technology creates increasingly hybridized notions of what is perceived as “human”.

“I focus on the digital era and how immateriality affects our perception of the natural world through digital content and computer-generated images. Solid and virtual works seek to portray and explore emotional crisis, isolation, and social and ecological environments.” — Yorgos Papafigos

Yorgos Papafigos is an Athens-based cross-media artist. Papafigos has presented solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums such as Tilt Platform (Athens), Romantso (Athens), WRO Art Center (Poland), Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery (New York), The Wrong Digital Art Biennale, Gossamer Fog Gallery (London), Kappatos Gallery (Athens), Whitechapel Gallery (London), The Schilizzi Foundation (London), ARTECITYA Art Science Technology Festival, Boston Centre for the Arts, and the CICA Museum (South Korea).

Artist’s Statement About the Work

Boliasma II and Untitled II introduce unusual personal sculptural devices that address the impact of intelligent systems on the environment. Industrial toxic materials, organic matter and electronic waste are assembled and welded together with medical instruments used for healing. Reminiscent of trash collectors with an eerie aesthetic, these objects look like contemporary grafting (boliasma) devices that involve both the possibility of transformation but also failure. They could generate a new form of energy, or they could end up being remains of materials with different decay times affecting the environment. Made from fragments of the culture of connectivity, the sculptures comment on humans' constant effort to restore their relationship with the environment through new technological inventions and interventions.

A Random Event in the Field involves a deeper exploration of video and gaming technology to investigate the connection between individuals and their social and ecological environment. By utilizing a combination of 3D scanning, 3D modeling techniques, and sound, Papafigos has created a fusion of objects and animation that conveys the essence of the human experience while offering commentary on contemporary society. The ongoing project, titled "A random event in the field (Part1)," examines themes of alienation, human perception, and the impact of everyday technology on our culture. The project features multiple screens, each displaying a different perspective to enable a deeper level of audience engagement. Using advanced engine technology, the project creates richly detailed and textured 3D environments and simulations, drawing the viewer into a world that is both familiar and otherworldly. The continuation project aims to explore the intricate relationship between technology and the natural world through a series of vignettes, merging personal experiences and disquieting situations to create a coherent narrative that examines the complex dynamics between the individual and their environment. Overall, the project invites reflection on how technology shapes our perception of the world and how our memories are no longer restricted to physical objects but exist in the digital space that we inhabit.
